I recently attended conj-labs in Bruxelles with Lau Jensen and Christophe Grand.

Good news: I’ve received an offer from Lau for all dcug members:

DCUG members can make a group sign-up and pay only €900 for the course fee.

I can personally guarantee the quality of the course. Even if you are experienced or a novice this is a great way to learn Clojure from the experts.

“Clojure is a fairly new programming language for the JVM (and CLR) focusing on expressive power, functional programming and concurrency, while at the same time remaining practical in terms of performance, productivity and interoperability with the host platform.

We then proceed to give an introduction to Clojure focusing on the most important concepts more than on syntax. Finally, we see how some of those Java concurrency problems are handled in Clojure. ”

I’m attending the Conj Labs Clojure training course in Brussels June 23rd-25th. After that there will be at least two dcug meet-ups within the next six months and one introductory Trifork geek-night.

We need to pick the dates for the Aarhus-meetup mentioned here:

The topics: I’ll talk a bit about 1.2 features protocols and datatypes. Then we will have a hacking session where we each bring our own code and hack on that. Those who want to could give a brief 2-5min presentation and discuss problems solutions and best practices (Jacob how about your project?). Put date suggestions in comments – the should be sometime after June 25th – I’ll create a Doodle for voting after I see some suggestions.
DCUG meet up featuring Rich Hickey and Stuart Halloway. Free event Oct. 5th at the JAOO conference.
After that I’ll give an introductory talk about Clojure as a Trifork geek-night with the option to pay a small fee and stay for an “extended” hands-on session (advice for getting started)

Who would be interested in a dcug meetup in Aarhus where we would focus on getting started with Clojure?

Topics?

* Getting a development environment up and running.

* Namespaces

* Compiling and interoperating with Java (gen-class, gen-interface, defprotocol, deftype, defrecord)

* A practical example of using Christope Grand’s Enlive! (http://github.com/cgrand/enlive).

JAOO Discount for DCUG members

As promised earlier, we now have a special discount on JAOO tickets and tutorials for dcug members. JAOO is looking cool Clojure-wise!

Please note that even if you are unable to make the JAOO conference, I am planning a free dcug workshop in conjunction with the conference. Last years meet up was a success – we had Rich for three hours talking about the future of Clojure! This year I expect both Rich and Stuart to participate so even better. More info on that later.

Regarding the discount: You will get:

20% discount on the DKK 15.000,- for 3 conference days (earlybird 12.750 until june 15)

Flexibility to choose three days among conference and tutorial days. E.g., take the Clojure related conference days and a tutorial-day

Possibility of additional discounts for synchronized dcug signup. What is meant by “synchronized” is that if at least 5 dcug members sign up in one “batch” as a group, we can get additional discounts.

If you are interested, send me an email and I can give you the discount code or I can put you in a list of interested dcug’ers we should try to get additional group-signup discount. There are some technical problems at the jaoo site regarding the flexible signup mentioned above – if you want flexible signup let me know too – I can talk to Jacob at Trifork.

Rich Hickey and Stuart Halloway in Denmark

Hello dcug’ers.
Not much activity here – I’ve been busy and there wasn’t much interest in a meetup last I asked.

I have some good news, though. The JAOO Aarhus 2010 conference will be perhaps one of the best ever this year – check out this partial list of speakers – I am really excited about it! Clojure-wise both Rich Hickey and Stuart Halloway (author of the introductory Programming Clojure book) are speaking at JAOO. Both are excellent speakers

There will be at least three Clojure-related talks [I have some influence on this ] – and just as last year I will be arranging a free DCUG Clojure workshop (I haven’t asked Rich or Stuart yet – but I suspect they will be happy to participate).

I suspect I will be able to get a discount for dcug members – if you are interested let me know.

Also regarding dcug activity: I will try and arrange one or two dcug Clojure meetings before the conference. Updates soon.

New Clojure features and Aarhus meetup?

There are lot’s of interesting things happening with Clojure: The release of 1.1 packing lots of cool stuff (see changelog) like Transients, Chunked Seqs, Futures and Promises.

For those following the “new” branch of Clojure which was recently merged into master there are some very interesting things down the road: Protocols and Datatypes (I don’t think that documentation is entirely up to date). To me these are groundbreaking feature that lets me use the better versions of the good parts of Object Orientation (i.e. domain modeling and open type-based polymorphism) while staying completely functional and avoiding the not-so-good parts of OO. Jacob: Programming Clojure will no longer be so much different

I was wondering who would be up for a dcug meetup in Aarhus some time soon? I am not sure what we will do for the meetup: I could talk about these new features, but I’d prefer someone else talking for a change I am open to ideas.. Perhaps we should invite Lau? Let me know if you are interested and, if so, what you would like to do…
